B.K. Hariprasad Appointed Karnataka Congress President After D.K. Shivakumar’s Resignation

By South Matters Political Desk | Karnataka

The B.K. Hariprasad Karnataka Congress President appointment marks a significant organizational change in the state’s ruling party. The All India Congress Committee has named veteran leader B.K. Hariprasad as the new Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President following the resignation of D.K. Shivakumar after assuming office as Chief Minister of Karnataka.

The move separates government administration from party affairs and strengthens the Congress organization ahead of future electoral challenges.

Who Is B.K. Hariprasad?

B. K. Hariprasad is one of the Congress party’s most experienced leaders. Born on July 29, 1954, in Bengaluru, he has been associated with the Indian National Congress since 1972.

A Commerce graduate, Hariprasad rose through the ranks of student politics before becoming a prominent national leader within the Congress organization.

Long Political Career in Congress

Hariprasad has held several important positions in the Congress party over the last five decades.

He served as:

  • General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (2006–2018)
  • Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (2001–2006)
  • Chairman of the All India Congress Seva Dal (2000–2001)
  • Vice President of the All India Youth Congress (1989–1990)

He was also elected to the Rajya Sabha on four occasions and represented the party in several parliamentary committees.

National and International Experience

Throughout his political career, Hariprasad handled party affairs in multiple states, including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar, Punjab, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

He also represented India at international forums, including the United Nations General Assembly in 2009. Additionally, he participated in global conferences in the United States, Spain, Russia, Geneva and other countries.

Congress Focuses on Organization

The appointment comes immediately after D. K. Shivakumar took oath as Karnataka Chief Minister.

Congress leaders believe the new arrangement will allow Shivakumar to focus on governance while Hariprasad concentrates on strengthening the party organization across Karnataka.

The leadership change is also viewed as an effort to balance social representation within the party.

Preparing for 2028 Elections

After assuming charge, Hariprasad expressed confidence about the Congress party’s future in Karnataka.

He emphasized grassroots strengthening, social justice and secular values while highlighting the government’s commitment to fulfilling election promises.

Party leaders expect his extensive organizational experience to help Congress prepare for the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections.

What Lies Ahead?

With a veteran strategist now handling party affairs and Shivakumar leading the government, Congress hopes to maintain its political momentum in Karnataka.

The coming months will test how effectively the new leadership structure can strengthen the party, expand its grassroots presence and prepare for future electoral battles.
