A powerful Philippines Earthquake measuring magnitude 7.8 struck off the southern island of Mindanao on Monday morning, causing structural damage and triggering tsunami alerts across several Asian countries.

The earthquake hit shortly before 7:40 a.m. local time. Authorities immediately activated emergency response measures as strong tremors shook large parts of the southern Philippines.

Strong Quake Damages Buildings

The Philippines Earthquake caused significant damage in several areas, including General Santos City.

Videos circulating online showed the collapse of a three-storey building housing a popular fast-food outlet. Other structures suffered cracked walls, shattered windows and damaged roofs.

Residents reported intense shaking that lasted several seconds, while aftershocks continued for more than an hour following the main quake.

Tsunami Alerts Issued Across Asia

Authorities issued tsunami warnings and evacuation advisories in multiple countries after the earthquake.

Officials warned that waves of up to three metres could affect parts of the Philippines. Meanwhile, smaller tsunami waves remained possible in Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and nearby Pacific regions.

Emergency agencies urged coastal residents to move to higher ground immediately and avoid beaches, ports and waterfront areas.

Philippines Activates Emergency Response

Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed that disaster response agencies were mobilized following the earthquake.

Schools in several provinces of Mindanao suspended classes as authorities assessed damage and monitored tsunami risks.

Local governments also coordinated evacuations in vulnerable coastal communities.

Regional Authorities Remain on Alert

Officials in Japan and Indonesia continued monitoring sea levels and coastal conditions throughout the day.

Disaster management agencies warned that strong currents and dangerous waves could continue even after initial tsunami warnings were downgraded.

The full extent of casualties and damage remains under assessment as rescue and recovery teams continue operations.
