NDA Nears Two-Thirds Majority in Rajya Sabha, Just 9 Seats Away

New Delhi, June 16, 2026:

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is inching closer to securing a two-thirds majority in the Rajya Sabha, with the ruling coalition now holding 163 seats in the Upper House.

To achieve the crucial two-thirds mark, the NDA requires 172 members, placing it just nine seats short of the milestone. The development has sparked political discussions over the coalition’s ability to push through major legislative and constitutional reforms in the future.

NDA Rajya Sabha Strength Reaches 163

With a current strength of 163 members, the NDA has significantly strengthened its position in the Rajya Sabha.

Political observers note that any further shifts in support from regional parties or changes in the opposition landscape could bring the alliance even closer to the two-thirds threshold.

The evolving political situation involving parties such as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is being closely watched for its potential impact on parliamentary equations.

Key Bills Could Face Fewer Hurdles

If the NDA manages to secure the remaining numbers, major reforms and legislative proposals could face fewer obstacles in the Rajya Sabha.

Issues frequently discussed in political circles include:

  • One Nation, One Election
  • Delimitation-related reforms
  • Constitutional amendments requiring special majorities

A stronger position in the Upper House would enhance the government’s ability to advance such proposals.

Lok Sabha Numbers Tell a Different Story

While the NDA is approaching the two-thirds mark in the Rajya Sabha, the situation remains different in the Lok Sabha.

A two-thirds majority in the Lower House requires 363 seats. The NDA currently holds around 314 seats, leaving a substantial gap before reaching the required threshold.

As a result, despite growing strength in the Rajya Sabha, the alliance remains some distance away from a similar position in the Lok Sabha.

Opposition Parties Under Pressure

Several key constituents of the INDIA bloc, including TMC, AAP, and DMK, are facing political challenges in their respective states.

Analysts believe these developments could influence future parliamentary dynamics and potentially strengthen the NDA’s position further.

For now, the NDA’s steady rise in the Rajya Sabha signals increasing political momentum, while the road to a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha remains considerably longer.
