New Delhi, June 16, 2026:
Air India has introduced a new Air India Basic Fare option for domestic Economy Class travellers, offering a lower-cost travel choice for passengers who prefer unbundled services and greater flexibility in how they pay for their journey.
The new fare category is being rolled out on select domestic routes as part of a pilot program and is aimed at price-conscious travellers looking for affordable travel options without additional bundled services.
Air India Basic Fare Designed for Value-Conscious Travellers
Under the new Air India Basic Fare, passengers will receive a 15 kg checked baggage allowance and a 7 kg cabin baggage allowance.
Unlike Air India’s existing fare categories, complimentary meals are not included with the Basic Fare. However, passengers will continue to receive complimentary tea or coffee during the flight.
The airline stated that the fare has been designed for travellers who prioritize lower ticket prices and prefer to pay only for the services they use.
More Choices for Domestic Air Passengers
The Air India Basic Fare joins the airline’s existing fare families—Value, Classic, and Flex—which were introduced in 2024 to simplify travel options and provide greater transparency.
Passengers booking Value, Classic, and Flex fares will continue to receive complimentary meals and additional bundled benefits depending on the fare category selected.
According to Air India, the addition of Basic Fare expands customer choice rather than replacing existing options.
Passengers Can Pre-Book Meals
Travellers choosing the Air India Basic Fare will have the option to purchase meals separately up to 24 hours before departure.
Available meal options include:
- Vegetarian meals
- Non-Vegetarian meals
- Jain meals
- Diabetic meals
Air India said that if a flight schedule changes, pre-purchased meals will automatically transfer to the new flight or be refunded if unavailable.
Pilot Rollout on Select Domestic Routes
Currently, the Air India Basic Fare is being tested on select domestic routes as part of a pilot phase.
The airline will evaluate passenger feedback and booking trends before deciding on a wider rollout.
For now, the fare can only be booked through Air India’s direct channels, including its website, mobile application, contact center, and airport ticketing offices.
Air India Focuses on Customer-Centric Travel
Air India said the introduction of the Basic Fare reflects changing traveller preferences and growing demand for customizable travel experiences.
As part of its ongoing transformation strategy, the airline aims to offer passengers greater value, flexibility, and transparency while maintaining full-service options for customers who prefer an all-inclusive travel experience.
