Chennai, June 18: The TVK government has strongly opposed Kerala’s demand for a new Mullaperiyar dam. The government said it will not allow the construction of a new dam and will continue efforts to raise the water level in the existing Mullaperiyar dam.
The statement was made during the policy address delivered in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday.
TVK Government Stands Firm on Mullaperiyar Issue
The policy address made it clear that the government will oppose any attempt by Kerala to replace the existing Mullaperiyar dam.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Tamil Nadu’s water rights and ensuring adequate water supply for farmers who depend on the dam.
Key Announcements in Assembly
The Tamil Nadu Assembly session began with the Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by the National Anthem.
During the address, the Governor congratulated newly elected members and outlined the priorities of the TVK government.
The policy statement described TVK as a party that stands above caste, religion, and money. It also referred to leaders such as Periyar, C.N. Annadurai, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Government Reaffirms Two-Language Policy
The government said Tamil Nadu will continue to follow the two-language policy.
It also reiterated its opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) and rejected any attempt to link central funding with the three-language formula.
The policy address stated that Tamil Nadu will continue to defend the state’s rights on issues affecting its people.
Strong Message on Law and Order
The government said it will show zero tolerance towards crimes against women.
It also criticised the previous DMK government, claiming that it failed to stop the spread of drugs and that drug-related activities contributed to rising crime in the state.
The Mullaperiyar issue remains one of the most sensitive matters between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and the latest statement from the TVK government is likely to trigger fresh political debate between the two states.
