Supreme Court rejects CBI probe plea in TVK horse trading case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a plea seeking a CBI investigation into alleged horse trading involving Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The court said the petition was vague. It also said there was no strong evidence to support the claims.

A bench of Chief Justice Suryakant and Justice V. Mohana heard the case. The petition was filed by K.K. Ramesh, a resident of Madurai. The petitioner alleged political bribery and inducements linked to party defections. He also sought a court-monitored CBI probe into the matter.

However, the court refused to entertain the plea. It said the petition did not contain clear facts or proof. The bench observed that such allegations cannot be considered without proper material. The Madras High Court had earlier also dismissed a similar petition seeking a CBI probe in the same case. It had noted the absence of evidence.

The Supreme Court reiterated that CBI investigations can be ordered only in exceptional cases. It added that strong and specific evidence is required before such action. The case relates to allegations of political defections in Tamil Nadu. With this order, the court has closed the current legal challenge.
