PM SHRI Scheme Back in Focus as Kerala Education Minister Targets Previous LDF Government

Thiruvananthapuram: The PM SHRI Scheme has returned to the centre of political debate in Kerala after Education Minister N Shamsudheen criticised the previous LDF government over its agreement with the Centre.

The minister said the former government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that limited the state’s ability to withdraw from the scheme. As a result, the issue has once again sparked discussion in political and education circles.

Major Political Issue Before 2026 Polls

The PM SHRI Scheme was one of the key issues before the 2026 Kerala Assembly election.

At that time, the UDF strongly opposed the programme. It accused the LDF of reaching an understanding with the BJP through the scheme. The opposition also argued that the project could help introduce parts of the National Education Policy (NEP) in Kerala.

Consequently, the issue became a major point of disagreement between the state’s two main political fronts.

What Is the PM SHRI Scheme?

The PM SHRI Scheme is a central government initiative aimed at improving the quality of education in government schools across India.

Under the programme, selected schools receive support for better infrastructure, digital learning facilities, smart classrooms and modern teaching methods. In addition, the scheme seeks to introduce reforms linked to the National Education Policy.

The Centre launched the programme to improve learning outcomes and provide students with better educational opportunities.

Different Views on the Scheme

Supporters of the PM SHRI Scheme say it can improve school infrastructure and raise education standards. They believe students will benefit from better facilities and modern learning tools.

However, critics have raised concerns about the scheme’s connection with the National Education Policy. They also question whether states will have enough freedom in implementing education policies.

Therefore, the programme continues to generate political debate in Kerala.

Debate Likely to Continue

The minister’s latest remarks have brought the PM SHRI Scheme back into public discussion. Political parties are expected to continue debating its benefits and long-term impact on the state’s education system.

As Kerala reviews its education policies, the PM SHRI Scheme is likely to remain an important topic in the months ahead.
