Karnataka Crop Insurance: Farmers Asked to Enrol

Mangaluru: The Karnataka Agriculture Department has urged farmers in the coastal districts to enrol in the Karnataka Raitha Suraksha Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana as the southwest monsoon continues to remain uncertain. Officials said the crop insurance scheme will provide financial support to farmers if crops fail due to poor rainfall or other natural disasters.

Farmers Can Register Until August 14

The Agriculture Department has started registrations for the scheme in Dakshina Kannada district. Farmers can enrol until August 14, 2026. IndusInd General Insurance Company Ltd. has been appointed to implement the scheme in the district.

Premium Fixed at ₹611.91 Per Acre

Farmers need to pay ₹611.91 per acre, which is 2% of the insured amount of ₹30,595.32, as their share of the premium. Eligible farmers can register and pay the premium at Grama One centres, Karnataka One centres, Hobli Raitha Samparka Kendras, or nearby bank branches.

Compensation for Crop Loss

Under the scheme, farmers will receive compensation if crops suffer damage due to drought, heavy rain, floods, landslides, hailstorms or other natural disasters.

If sowing fails in more than 75% of the notified area because of insufficient rainfall, insured farmers will immediately receive 50% of the insured amount.

The scheme also covers crop losses between sowing and harvest, as well as damage caused by unseasonal rain after harvesting.

Paddy Sowing Progress

The Agriculture Department has set a target of 10,000 hectares of paddy cultivation in Dakshina Kannada this season.

So far, farmers have completed sowing on only 70 hectares.

Officials said the district has enough seeds and fertilisers for the season. Around 750 quintals of paddy seeds are available, while 540 quintals have already been distributed.

The department has fixed a paddy sowing target of 36,000 hectares for Udupi district.

Officials urged farmers to take advantage of the crop insurance scheme to reduce financial risks during the monsoon season.
