Antwerp, July 1: Several people were killed and many others were injured after a massive fire broke out in a residential apartment building in the Belgian city of Antwerp on Wednesday, according to local police.
The fire started on the eighth floor of a 10-storey apartment building in the Linkeroever neighbourhood, where more than 200 people live.
Evacuation Underway
Emergency teams quickly launched an evacuation after thick smoke spread through the building.
Police urged nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed. They also advised people to switch off ventilation systems to avoid smoke entering their homes.
Firefighters Battle Massive Blaze
Firefighters rushed to the scene and worked to control the blaze under difficult conditions. Authorities said the size and intensity of the fire made the rescue operation challenging.
Several emergency response teams, police officers and a specialised drone unit joined the operation.
Casualties Confirmed
Police confirmed that several people lost their lives, while many others suffered injuries. However, officials have not yet released the exact number of deaths or the identities of the victims.
Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations inside the building.
