Andhra Pradesh: Nearly 45 lakh voter names have been removed from the Andhra Pradesh draft electoral roll after the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The draft list is open for claims and objections before the final electoral roll is published.
Nearly 45 lakh voter names have been removed from the Andhra Pradesh draft electoral roll after the Election Commission of India (ECI) completed its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The revision aims to update the voter database by removing duplicate, deceased, and shifted voters before the publication of the final electoral roll.
Andhra Pradesh Draft Electoral Roll Updated After SIR
The Election Commission said that 44.89 lakh voter names were removed from the Andhra Pradesh draft electoral roll during the Special Intensive Revision.
According to the Commission:
- 22.30 lakh names were removed because the voters had permanently shifted or could not be traced.
- 15.22 lakh names belonged to deceased voters.
- 7.37 lakh names were identified as duplicate registrations.
The Election Commission said the exercise was carried out to improve the accuracy of the voter list and ensure that only eligible voters remain on the electoral roll.
What Is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)?
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is a verification process conducted by the Election Commission before elections. Officials verify voter records through field verification and official documents to remove:
- Duplicate voter registrations
- Deceased voters
- People who have permanently shifted
- Incorrect voter records
The process also allows eligible citizens to apply for corrections or new voter registrations.
Andhra Pradesh Draft Electoral Roll Is Not Final
The Election Commission clarified that the current electoral roll is only a draft list. Any voter whose name has been removed by mistake can submit a claim or objection within the prescribed period.
After verifying all claims and objections, the Commission will publish the final Andhra Pradesh electoral roll.
The Commission has appealed to voters to check their details carefully and complete the correction process if required.
The large-scale revision has also drawn political attention in Andhra Pradesh, with political parties closely watching the verification process. However, the Election Commission has maintained that the exercise is part of its regular effort to keep the electoral roll accurate and up to date.
