Karnataka to Launch Dashboard to Track Groundwater Recharge Projects

Karnataka is set to introduce a dashboard to track groundwater recharge projects across the State, aiming to improve monitoring and provide better visibility into ongoing water conservation efforts. The proposed system is expected to help authorities track projects and assess their progress more effectively.

The move comes amid growing concerns over groundwater management and water availability in Karnataka. The State has been strengthening groundwater conservation and recharge measures through watershed development and other water-management programmes.

Dashboard to Improve Groundwater Project Monitoring

The proposed groundwater recharge dashboard is expected to provide a central platform for monitoring projects being implemented across Karnataka.

Such a system can help authorities track the status of individual projects, identify delays and assess whether planned recharge measures are being completed. It could also improve coordination between departments involved in groundwater management.

Karnataka already maintains groundwater-related data through its Groundwater Directorate and Karnataka Groundwater Authority, including groundwater resource assessments and district-level reports.

Focus on Groundwater Recharge and Water Conservation

Groundwater recharge is an important part of Karnataka’s water-management strategy, particularly in areas vulnerable to water shortages. The State has previously implemented watershed programmes aimed at improving groundwater levels, supporting agriculture and restoring degraded land.

The proposed dashboard could make it easier to monitor the progress and impact of these projects while providing officials with information needed for better planning.

The initiative is also significant as Karnataka faces continuing concerns over rainfall variability and water availability. Recent reports have highlighted a substantial monsoon rainfall deficit across several taluks, increasing the importance of long-term water conservation measures.

Digital Monitoring Could Strengthen Water Management

A centralised digital platform could help Karnataka move towards more data-driven groundwater management. Regular updates on recharge projects may allow authorities to identify areas requiring additional intervention and improve the allocation of resources.

The system could also strengthen accountability by making project progress easier to monitor. If implemented effectively, the dashboard may become an important tool for tracking Karnataka’s groundwater recharge efforts and supporting long-term water security.
