An Indian pilot helped prevent a possible disaster after a violent confrontation took place inside the cockpit of a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 later made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Indian Captain Smit Machchhar Takes Control
Smit Machchhar, a former SpiceJet commander, was flying Flydubai Flight FZ1073 on Wednesday when the incident took place. According to officials and media reports, his Omani co-pilot attacked him and tried to take control of the aircraft.
The flight was carrying around 174 to 180 passengers and crew members. The aircraft was flying over north-western Saudi Arabia when it suddenly lost more than 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds.
Flight-tracking data showed sharp changes in the aircraft’s altitude. The aircraft also sent emergency code 7500, which is an international signal used to indicate unlawful interference.
Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia
The situation was brought under control after the cockpit was secured. The aircraft then diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia and landed safely.
All passengers and crew members on board were accounted for after the emergency landing.
Flydubai later confirmed that an altercation had taken place inside the flight deck. The airline also said that off-duty crew members travelling as passengers helped secure the aircraft.
Investigation Underway
Israeli officials have described the incident as a possible terrorist attack or an attempt to crash the aircraft. However, investigators are still working to establish what exactly happened and why the confrontation took place.
Flydubai has not confirmed a motive for the incident.
