India is among seven countries currently involved in discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. The other countries are Germany, Hungary, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Türkiye.
India has expressed its interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, with Ahmedabad identified as the proposed host city. India submitted its Expression of Interest in 2024 as part of its effort to bring the Olympic Games to the country.
The latest development puts India among the countries continuing discussions with the IOC. Under the revised selection process, the IOC is expected to assess the projects before deciding which potential hosts move forward to the next stage.
The IOC has introduced a dialogue-based process for selecting future Olympic hosts. This approach allows the organisation to work with interested countries and cities before identifying preferred hosts.
India has been preparing its Olympic proposal around Ahmedabad and the wider Gujarat region. The proposed project is expected to focus on existing and planned sports infrastructure, transport facilities and long-term benefits for the host region.
The IOC’s current process also places importance on sustainable venues and long-term use of infrastructure. Its guidance encourages potential hosts to make use of existing and planned venues where possible, while requiring clear legacy plans for new permanent facilities.
Germany, Hungary, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Türkiye are also pursuing the opportunity. Each country has its own plans and proposed approach for hosting the Games.
The IOC is expected to draw up a shortlist in March 2027, with the preferred host or hosts expected to be designated in 2028. The final selection is expected by mid-2029.
If selected, India would host the Summer Olympics for the first time. The country has previously hosted major international sporting events, including the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
The 2028 Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, while Brisbane is scheduled to host the 2032 Games. The 2036 edition will therefore be the next available Summer Olympics after Brisbane.
India’s proposal will now face further evaluation as the IOC continues its host-selection process. The final decision will depend on the assessment and dialogue stages before the IOC chooses the host for the 2036 Games.
