Photos of medicine covers used at Karur Government Medical College Hospital in Tamil Nadu have sparked a language controversy. The covers reportedly carried instructions in Tamil, English and Hindi.
The presence of Hindi on the covers drew criticism from DMK leaders and supporters of Tamil Nadu’s two-language policy. DMK leader Dr T R B Rajaa questioned the use of Hindi and described it as a departure from the state’s established approach to Tamil and English.
The issue gained attention after photographs of the medicine covers were shared online. The labels reportedly contained instructions intended to help patients understand how to use the medicines safely.
Hospital authorities later clarified the circumstances behind the covers. The hospital dean said the covers had been printed in December and were distributed without the staff realising that Hindi had been included.
Following the controversy, hospital staff stopped using the medicine covers in question. Officials are expected to ensure that future covers follow the required language format.
Tamil Nadu has long followed a two-language policy based on Tamil and English. Language remains a sensitive political and cultural issue in the state, particularly when the use of Hindi is linked to government services or public institutions.
At the same time, some commentators have defended the inclusion of Hindi in healthcare communication. Political analyst Sumanth Raman argued that Hindi instructions could help migrant workers from Hindi-speaking states understand important medicine information.
Tamil Nadu has a large migrant workforce, with workers from several parts of India living and working in cities such as Coimbatore, Chennai, Tiruppur and other industrial centres. Supporters of multilingual instructions say they can help patients who may not be comfortable reading Tamil or English.
The debate therefore involves two different concerns. One is the protection of Tamil Nadu’s established language policy. The other is ensuring that patients from different linguistic backgrounds can understand medical instructions, especially during emergencies.
The Karur hospital has already stopped using the disputed covers. The incident has nevertheless renewed discussion about language choices in government hospitals and other public services across Tamil Nadu.
The controversy also highlights the importance of clear medicine instructions. Healthcare authorities must ensure that patients can understand dosage and usage information while also following the language policies applicable to government institutions.
