Tamil Nadu Police Set for Major Modernisation With ₹212.58 Crore Allocation

The Tamil Nadu Police Department is set for a major modernisation programme with a total allocation of ₹212.58 crore. The approval covers surveillance, information technology, communication, security, special-purpose vehicles and weapons.

According to the government document shared with the allocation details, communication equipment has received the largest share. Around ₹99.03 crore has been approved for communication-related equipment.

The allocation also includes ₹55 crore for mobility under the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS). The document provides for 500 special-purpose four-wheelers, with an approved amount of ₹55 crore.

Surveillance equipment has been allocated ₹30.51 crore. The plan includes strengthening CCTV monitoring and connectivity across the police network.

Under the surveillance programme, centralised monitoring of installed CCTV systems is planned for police stations and headquarters. The document lists connectivity for 877 police stations through VPN routers.

The modernisation plan also includes CCTV surveillance systems for 46 cybercrime police stations. A separate provision has been made for CCTV systems at 56 unmanned repeater stations, along with connectivity and monitoring facilities.

Information technology equipment has been allocated ₹13.43 crore. The investment is expected to support the department’s wider digital and communication requirements.

Security equipment has received ₹11.28 crore. The document includes equipment for the Security Branch-CID and bomb detection and disposal teams.

The security allocation covers surveillance and detection equipment, including metal detectors, dash cameras, wireless communication systems and other security devices. A separate provision has also been made for bomb suits.

Another ₹3.33 crore has been approved for weapons and related equipment for police operations. The allocation includes different categories of operational firearms and training equipment.

The combined allocation across all six categories comes to ₹212.58 crore. The document states that the amount was approved by the High Powered Committee.

The modernisation programme is aimed at improving surveillance, communication, emergency response, cybercrime monitoring and operational capabilities across the Tamil Nadu Police Department.

The investment also comes as police departments across India increasingly focus on technology-driven policing. Better CCTV networks, digital connectivity and modern equipment can support faster response and investigation.

The government document provides a detailed breakdown of the approved expenditure. The implementation of the projects and procurement of the equipment will determine how quickly the modernisation programme reaches police units across the state.
