Prime Minister Narendra Modi is marking 25 years of uninterrupted service as the head of a government on October 7, 2026. His journey began on October 7, 2001, when he took oath as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He later became Prime Minister of India in 2014.
The Union Cabinet passed a resolution on October 6 to mark the milestone. The resolution highlighted Modi’s 25 years of continuous leadership and listed initiatives related to welfare, infrastructure, technology, economic development and connectivity.
Several political leaders have also marked the occasion. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu spoke about Modi’s long political journey and his experience of working with him over the years.
Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also congratulated Modi on the anniversary. In a message dated October 7, Tinubu described the milestone as 25 years since Modi first became head of government in Gujarat. He also highlighted cooperation between India and Nigeria in areas including trade, energy, defence, health and technology.
The Union Cabinet’s resolution pointed to several welfare measures associated with Modi’s tenure. Government figures say more than 25 crore people have moved out of multidimensional poverty through expanded welfare and social protection programmes.
Infrastructure has also remained a major focus. Government data highlights growth in national highways, railways, airports, housing and digital infrastructure. Initiatives such as PM GatiShakti have been presented as part of efforts to improve connectivity and coordinate infrastructure development.
The government has also highlighted schemes covering housing, drinking water, sanitation, health insurance, LPG connections and food support. According to official figures, more than 81 crore people are covered under the foodgrain support programme, while millions of households have received housing, water and other basic services.
Modi’s 25-year political journey has included more than 12 years as Gujarat Chief Minister and more than 12 years as Prime Minister. In June 2026, the Union Cabinet noted that he had become India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in continuous office, surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s previous record.
The milestone is being marked through programmes and public events across the country. The celebrations also connect Modi’s long political career with the government’s goal of building a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047.
