Suspected Bangladeshi Nationals Detained Near Bengal Border Amid Voter Roll Dispute

More than 25 people suspected of being Bangladeshi nationals were detained near the India-Bangladesh border in South Dinajpur, West Bengal, according to reports. Border Security Force personnel reportedly intercepted the group while they were allegedly attempting to cross into India illegally.

The operation was carried out with assistance from local villagers, who alerted security personnel about the suspected movement near the border. Officials reportedly recovered identity documents from some of those detained, including Aadhaar cards and Bangladeshi identification documents.

Authorities are examining the identities and backgrounds of the detained individuals. Reports also said that some of them had previously worked in Jammu and Kashmir for several years. The verification process is expected to determine their citizenship and whether any of the documents were genuine.

The incident comes amid a wider debate over voter lists and citizenship verification in several parts of the country. The Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, of electoral rolls has led to scrutiny of voter records and the eligibility of people whose names appear on electoral lists.

In a separate case, four men from Murshidabad are reportedly being held in Chhattisgarh after their names were removed from voter rolls during the SIR process. The four men have been identified as Sabir Sheikh, Safikul Islam, Nasiruddin Sheikh and Laltu Sheikh.

According to reports, 19 other people from the same group were released after verification of their documents and identities. The cases have raised questions about how citizenship checks and electoral roll verification are being carried out.

The matter has also reached the Calcutta High Court. The court reportedly questioned the handling of parallel citizenship inquiries while appeals connected to the voter roll process remain pending.

The court sought a detailed report on the issue and raised concerns over the apparent overlap between the electoral roll revision process and separate citizenship investigations.

The developments highlight the sensitive nature of citizenship and voter registration issues in border states such as West Bengal. Authorities must establish citizenship status through proper legal procedures before any final action is taken.

The detention of suspected foreign nationals and the voter roll cases are separate matters, although both involve questions about identity and documentation. Officials are continuing verification in the respective cases.

The legal proceedings and administrative checks are expected to determine the status of the individuals involved. Further developments may follow as authorities submit reports and courts examine the pending matters.
