BREAKING: Delhi Police has blocked the INDIA bloc’s protest march towards Jantar Mantar in New Delhi as Opposition MPs gathered to demonstrate against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Rahul Gandhi was among the Opposition leaders heading towards Jantar Mantar, where a heavy police presence and barricades were deployed. Around 300 INDIA bloc MPs had gathered for the protest, according to reports.
Visuals from the protest show Delhi Police personnel surrounding Rahul Gandhi as the march was stopped. Security forces have been deployed at several points in central Delhi.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also seen participating in the protest. Videos and visuals from the ground showed her sitting on the road as the standoff with police continued.
The Opposition leaders are protesting against the Election Commission and have raised concerns over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. They are demanding action over what they allege are irregularities in the electoral process.
The latest demonstration comes a day after Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other Opposition leaders were detained following a prolonged protest at Akashvani Bhawan. Police had earlier stopped the INDIA bloc march towards the Election Commission headquarters.
Security has been significantly strengthened around Jantar Mantar and other parts of central Delhi. Barricades have been installed and additional police personnel deployed to control the gathering.
The situation remains tense as Opposition leaders continue their protest and police attempt to prevent the march from moving beyond the designated area.
