Trump Announces ‘Energy Ceasefire’ Between Russia and Ukraine

US President Donald Trump has announced what he described as an immediate “energy ceasefire” in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that both countries had agreed to the arrangement and warned them against violating it.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Trump wrote. He ended the message by thanking readers for their attention.

However, the announcement did not provide details about the terms of the proposed ceasefire. It remains unclear how long the arrangement would last, which energy facilities would be covered or how compliance would be monitored.

Energy infrastructure has remained an important target during the Russia-Ukraine war. Attacks on power plants, electricity networks, oil refineries and other facilities can disrupt essential services and affect millions of people. Damage to these facilities can also create wider economic challenges and increase pressure on energy supplies.

If implemented and respected by both sides, an energy ceasefire could help protect critical infrastructure and reduce disruptions to electricity and fuel supplies. It could also provide some relief to civilians affected by the continuing conflict.

However, an announcement alone does not establish that a ceasefire is fully operational. Confirmation from the Russian and Ukrainian governments, along with details about the agreement’s scope and implementation, would be necessary to assess its status.

The announcement has drawn attention to the possibility of limiting attacks on energy facilities even as the wider conflict continues. Whether it leads to a sustained reduction in attacks will depend on the response of both countries and their compliance with any agreed terms.
