Political tension escalated in Punganur, Andhra Pradesh, after the convoy of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) Lok Sabha floor leader and Rajampet MP P. V. Midhun Reddy came under attack during local body election nomination proceedings on October 16.
Midhun Reddy was accompanying YSRCP candidates and party leaders to the nomination centre when the incident occurred. According to reports, vehicles in the convoy were targeted with stones and sticks, leaving several vehicles damaged. The incident created tension in the area as party workers gathered near the nomination centre.
YSRCP alleged that Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers blocked the movement of its leaders and prevented candidates from proceeding to file their nomination papers. The opposition party also criticised the police response, alleging that officers present at the location failed to prevent the attack.
The incident has intensified the political confrontation between the ruling TDP and the opposition YSRCP during the local body election process. Nomination periods are a crucial stage in elections, as candidates must submit their papers within the prescribed deadlines to remain in the contest.
Following the incident, YSRCP condemned the violence and called for immediate action against those responsible. The party demanded intervention by the State Election Commission, the registration of criminal cases and adequate security for candidates and their proposers. It also called for arrangements to ensure that candidates facing obstruction could complete the nomination process.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of political leaders and candidates during elections. Ensuring that candidates can file nominations without intimidation or obstruction is essential to maintaining a fair electoral process.
With allegations and counterclaims emerging during the election period, the response of the police and the State Election Commission will be closely watched. An impartial investigation and effective security arrangements will be important to establish accountability and prevent further clashes in Punganur.
