The Supreme Court has issued important directions on the Andhra Pradesh urban local body elections while hearing a petition filed by the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP). The court directed the State Election Commission (SEC) not to announce the final list of candidates until October 25, 2026.
The court observed that the YSRCP had initially presented supporting evidence for its arguments. It also considered physical and electronic evidence submitted to the Election Commission. While constitutional courts generally avoid interfering in the election process, the Supreme Court said they cannot remain silent if unconstitutional or illegal actions affect free and fair elections.
The court directed the State Election Commission to decide on extending the nomination deadline by October 22. The commission must examine representations submitted by the YSRCP and other candidates, along with supporting evidence, including videos. It must also identify urban local bodies where candidates were unable to file nominations because of law-and-order problems.
If the commission decides to extend the deadline in any affected area, it must revise the election notification and provide candidates with at least 48 hours to file their nominations after announcing the extension.
The Supreme Court also directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure adequate protection for candidates filing nominations. Police must provide security at nomination centres, arrange CCTV surveillance and take necessary steps to ensure candidates can submit their nominations without fear. The DGP must submit a report to the court on the implementation of these directions.
The State Election Commission was further instructed to address the concerns raised by the YSRCP and other participants in the election process. The court stressed the need to provide all candidates with equal opportunities to contest freely and fairly. The commission must also submit an implementation report.
The matter has been listed for the next hearing on October 26, 2026. The court will review the compliance reports from the State Election Commission and the DGP as part of the proceedings.
