Thousands of people from Meitei, Naga and other indigenous communities took part in a major protest in Imphal on October 31, 2026. The demonstration was organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and received support from Naga councils.
The protesters demanded an end to what they described as a proxy conflict backed by the central government. They also called for the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the state and the scrapping of the expired Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki militant groups.
Other key demands included the resettlement of displaced people and updating the National Register of Citizens using 1951 as the base year.
During the protest, COCOMI convenor Y.K. Dhiren reportedly called for the resignation of the state government over its handling of the ongoing crisis.
Manipur has been facing ethnic violence since May 2023. The conflict has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced tens of thousands of people.
The protesters have also passed resolutions on their demands, which are expected to be submitted to the central government in New Delhi.
