Tamil cinema’s much-anticipated political action thriller Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth and starring Vijay, is now eyeing a mid-February theatrical release after facing unexpected legal and certification hurdles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Originally slated for a January 9 Pongal release, Jana Nayagan missed the festive window due to disagreements over its certification. The CBFC reportedly sought multiple cuts to grant the film a U/A 16+ rating, which the makers complied with. However, despite making the requested changes, the film was later referred to a revising committee, delaying the certification process further.
Legal Battle Reaches Madras High Court
Frustrated by the prolonged delay, the producers approached the Madras High Court. A single judge initially ruled in favour of the filmmakers, directing the CBFC to proceed with certification. However, the relief was short-lived as a division bench later remanded the matter for a fresh hearing, effectively putting the release on hold.
According to industry sources, the producers are now considering withdrawing the legal petition to resume direct discussions with the CBFC, hoping to resolve the issue amicably and avoid further delays.
February Release Likely Amid Theatre Slump
With Tamil Nadu theatres currently witnessing a dry spell at the box office, trade analysts believe Jana Nayagan could significantly revive footfalls if it releases in February. The film is now expected to hit screens on February 12 or 13, subject to certification clearance.
Starring Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Gautham Vasudev Menon, Jana Nayagan has generated massive buzz for its intense political narrative and Vijay’s powerful on-screen presence. Fan anticipation continues to mount, with social media flooded by calls for an early release.
