A Historic Win for Shane Lowry
Trump stayed on to watch the tournament’s final round, where Irish golfer Shane Lowry claimed his second Irish Open title, finishing 23 under par and winning by a record 11 shots. Trump presented Lowry with the trophy on the 18th green as the home crowd celebrated.
The Whiskey Tariff Announcement
During the trophy ceremony, Trump announced he was removing the 10% US tariff on Irish whiskey, saying Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Lowry himself had raised the issue with him. “On behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off,” Trump told the crowd. Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris called the move “a welcome announcement of economic significance,” while the Irish Whiskey Association said it “heartily welcomes” the decision.
Meetings and Controversial Remarks
Earlier in the visit, Trump met Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Irish President Catherine Connolly in Dublin. He also drew attention for repeated comments backing Irish unification, calling it “one of the naturals of all time,” remarks Martin later described as having caused an “overreaction.”

Trump concluded his visit by presenting the trophy, then traveled by helicopter to Shannon Airport before departing aboard Air Force One for Washington, D.C., bringing his first attendance by a sitting US president at the Irish Open to a close.
