Karnataka Weather Update: IMD Issues 7-Day Heavy Rain Forecast, Thunderstorm & Hailstorm Warning

Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a seven-day weather forecast for Karnataka, warning of widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and isolated heavy rain across many districts.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) also said several areas have received very heavy rainfall during the last 24 hours.

Rain and Thunderstorms Expected

According to the IMD, many parts of Karnataka are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall over the next few days. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are also expected. The weather department has warned that some interior districts could experience hailstorms on May 25. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open areas during lightning.

Regional Weather Forecast

Coastal Karnataka

Coastal districts are expected to receive rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds from May 24 to May 27. Weather conditions are likely to improve after May 28.

North Interior Karnataka

Several districts in North Interior Karnataka may experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds until May 27. Isolated hailstorms are also possible on May 25.

South Interior Karnataka

South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, is expected to receive moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning through May 27. Some interior areas may also witness hailstorms.

Heavy Rainfall Recorded

KSNDMC reported very heavy rainfall in several districts during the last 24 hours.

The highest rainfall recorded includes:

  • Babaleshwar, Vijayapura – 155 mm
  • Hiregandri, Uttara Kannada – 122 mm
  • Hattiyangadi, Udupi – 113.5 mm
  • Roudabanda UKP, Raichur – 112 mm
  • Chippalakatti, Belagavi – 107 mm

Bengaluru Nowcast Alert

The IMD has also issued a nowcast warning for districts including Ballari, Koppal, and Dharwad. These areas may experience moderate rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds over the next few hours.

The IMD warned that the ongoing weather could lead to:

  • Temporary power outages
  • Traffic congestion
  • Damage to weak structures
  • Falling tree branches
  • Crop damage in open agricultural fields

People are advised to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions during heavy rain and thunderstorms.With widespread rain expected over the next seven days, Karnataka is likely to experience active monsoon-like weather. The IMD has urged residents to remain alert, especially in districts under thunderstorm and hailstorm warnings.
