Thiruvananthapuram, June 22, 2026: The Kerala Legislative Assembly today began a three-day general discussion on the revised state budget for the 2026-27 financial year. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan presented the revised budget, which focuses on economic reforms, education, welfare, and industrial growth.
The debate will continue from June 22 to June 24. Lawmakers from both the ruling UDF government and the opposition are expected to discuss the state’s financial priorities and development plans.
Focus on Economic Reset
A key feature of the revised budget is the government’s effort to reset Kerala’s financial planning. The revised plan outlay takes into account changes recommended by the 16th Union Finance Commission. It also adjusts earlier financial projections made by the previous LDF government.
The government says the revised budget aims to strengthen fiscal stability while supporting long-term growth.
Industrial and Education Reforms
The budget proposes important land law reforms to support infrastructure projects and attract investments. The government believes these changes will help create jobs and improve industrial development across the state.
Another major proposal is the Knowledge Valley initiative. The project aims to bring leading foreign universities to Kerala and improve opportunities in higher education, research, and innovation.
Welfare Allocations for SC and ST Communities
The revised budget provides significant funding for welfare programmes. The government has allocated ₹527.68 crore for Scheduled Caste (SC) development and ₹152.52 crore for Scheduled Tribe (ST) welfare.
Officials say these allocations will support education, housing, healthcare, and livelihood projects for disadvantaged communities.
Support for MSMEs and Startups
The government has announced fresh support measures for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The budget also introduces a special Gen-Z Startup Fund to encourage young entrepreneurs and innovative business ideas.
Officials expect these initiatives to boost employment and strengthen Kerala’s startup ecosystem.
Legislative Schedule
The Assembly has announced the following schedule for budget discussions:
- General Discussion: June 22 – June 24
- Discussion and Voting on Budget Grants: June 29 – June 30
- Appropriation Bill: July 1
The coming days are expected to witness detailed discussions on fiscal policy, welfare spending, economic growth, and development priorities.
As the debate continues, all eyes remain on the Kerala Assembly to see how lawmakers shape the state’s financial roadmap for the year ahead.
