Kasaragod: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy rain will return to Kerala from June 28. The department has issued an Orange Alert for four northern districts. It has also warned of thunderstorms and strong winds across the state.
The districts under Orange Alert are Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode and Wayanad. The IMD expects heavy to very heavy rain in these districts on June 28. It has also issued an Orange Alert for Kannur and Kasaragod on June 29.
Orange Alert Issued for Four Districts
The IMD said an Orange Alert means very heavy rainfall is likely. Rainfall may range between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours. In addition, thunderstorms and winds of up to 40 kmph may occur in isolated places across Kerala.
Yellow Alert for Several Districts
The weather department has also issued Yellow Alerts for several districts from June 27 to July 1. A Yellow Alert means heavy rainfall is likely. Rainfall may range between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Therefore, residents should stay alert and follow official weather updates.
Monsoon Likely to Strengthen
The IMD said an upper air cyclonic circulation over northern Telangana and nearby areas is strengthening the southwest monsoon.
At the same time, a trough extending from coastal Andhra Pradesh to central Maharashtra is supporting rainfall. As a result, Kerala is likely to receive widespread rain until July 1. Northern districts may receive the heaviest rainfall.
Public Asked to Stay Alert
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has asked people living in landslide-prone and flood-prone areas to remain alert. Residents should move to safer places if local authorities issue evacuation orders. They should also avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
People should stay away from rivers, waterfalls and flooded areas. They should not cross flooded roads or rivers. They should also avoid taking selfies near overflowing water bodies.
Meanwhile, fishermen should follow official weather warnings before going out to sea.
The state government has activated district and taluk control rooms across Kerala. People can call the emergency helplines 1070 and 1077 if they need assistance during rain-related emergencies.
