Andaman Sea Natural Gas Discovery Boosts India’s Energy Security

By South Matters Energy Desk | Energy

The Andaman Sea Natural Gas Discovery has given a major boost to India’s offshore energy ambitions. Oil India Limited (OIL) confirmed the presence of natural gas at the Sri Vijayapuram-3 exploratory well in the Andaman Basin.

The discovery comes under India’s ambitious Samudra Manthan Mission. The programme aims to unlock deepwater and ultra-deepwater hydrocarbon reserves. Officials believe the latest success can strengthen India’s energy security and reduce dependence on imports.

Andaman Sea Natural Gas Discovery Marks Major Milestone

Oil India drilled the Sri Vijayapuram-3 well around 15 kilometres off the east coast of the Andaman Islands. The well is located in waters about 355 metres deep.

Initial testing confirmed the presence of natural gas. Engineers observed continuous gas flaring during production tests conducted at a depth of more than 1,900 metres in the Eocene formation.

The company has started collecting gas samples. Experts will analyse the composition and calorific value of the gas. Scientists will also conduct isotope studies to understand the origin of the reserves.

Andaman Sea Natural Gas Discovery Strengthens Exploration Efforts

This is the second successful hydrocarbon find in the current Andaman Basin campaign. Oil India has now reported hydrocarbon presence in two out of three exploratory wells drilled during the programme.

The success has increased confidence in the energy potential of the Andaman Basin. Industry experts believe the region could emerge as one of India’s most promising offshore exploration zones.

The discovery also supports the objectives of the Samudra Manthan Mission announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The mission seeks to accelerate exploration activities and improve domestic energy production.

Andaman Sea Natural Gas Discovery Opens New Opportunities

The latest find is expected to attract greater investment into India’s offshore energy sector. It may also strengthen partnerships with global energy companies.

Industry leaders believe continued exploration success can help India expand domestic gas production. The development could support economic growth while enhancing long-term energy security.

With two successful discoveries already reported, the Andaman Basin is increasingly becoming a strategic focus area for India’s future hydrocarbon exploration plans.
