Russian President Vladimir Putin has renewed Russia’s offer to supply and jointly develop the Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft with India. The proposal revives discussions that began under the earlier Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) program.
India exited the FGFA project in 2018 over concerns related to cost, stealth capabilities and engine performance. Since then, Russia has continued the Su-57 program independently and has inducted the aircraft into its military fleet.
Russia Offers Technology Transfer
Under the renewed proposal, Russia has reportedly offered India access to local production, technology transfer and joint development opportunities. Moscow believes the partnership could help strengthen India’s fighter aircraft fleet while deepening long-standing defence cooperation between the two countries.
Russia has built more than 40 Su-57 aircraft and continues to expand production. The fighter jet is designed for air superiority, precision strikes and advanced stealth operations.
India Focuses on Self-Reliance
The renewed offer comes at a time when India is pursuing indigenous defence projects under its self-reliance strategy. The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program remains India’s flagship fifth-generation fighter project.
However, defence experts note that the AMCA is still several years away from operational deployment. As a result, discussions around interim fighter aircraft requirements continue to attract attention.
Strategic Significance
The latest proposal highlights the importance of India-Russia defence ties despite changing geopolitical realities. Any future decision will likely depend on operational requirements, technology evaluation, cost considerations and India’s long-term defence objectives.
So far, the Indian government has not issued an official response to Russia’s renewed Su-57 proposal.
