A major milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s railway development journey was achieved as the South Coast Railway (SCoR) officially commenced operations from its headquarters in Visakhapatnam.
The launch of the new railway zone marks the realization of a long-pending demand and is expected to strengthen railway administration, connectivity and economic growth across the region.
India’s 18th Railway Zone Becomes Operational
South Coast Railway has become the 18th railway zone under Indian Railways.
Headquartered in Visakhapatnam, the zone will oversee key railway operations across Andhra Pradesh and surrounding regions.
The formation of South Coast Railway fulfills a major commitment linked to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014 and has been welcomed by political leaders and railway stakeholders.
Four Major Divisions Under SCoR
The newly operational South Coast Railway will manage four important railway divisions:
- Vijayawada Division
- Guntur Division
- Guntakal Division
- Visakhapatnam Division
Together, these divisions cover approximately 3,532 kilometers of railway network and 385 railway stations.
The zone also handles more than 500 passenger train services and around 800 freight operations.
Boost For Connectivity And Administration
Officials believe the establishment of South Coast Railway will improve operational efficiency and decision-making.
Previously, several railway divisions in Andhra Pradesh were administered under neighboring railway zones.
Now, the new zone will allow faster coordination, better planning and more focused infrastructure development within the state.
Furthermore, local administration is expected to improve passenger services and freight management.
Employment And Economic Impact
The new railway zone oversees nearly 17,000 railway employees.
Experts believe the presence of a dedicated zone headquarters in Visakhapatnam will generate additional economic activity and create opportunities for infrastructure expansion.
Moreover, improved railway administration could attract investments in logistics, freight transportation and industrial development.
Leaders Welcome The Development
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and several other leaders welcomed the launch of the new zone.
They described South Coast Railway as an important step toward strengthening Andhra Pradesh’s transport network and accelerating regional growth.
Supporters also noted that the zone would reduce dependence on neighboring railway administrations and provide Andhra Pradesh with greater operational control.
A New Chapter For Andhra Pradesh Railways
The commencement of South Coast Railway operations represents a significant development for Indian Railways and Andhra Pradesh.
With dedicated administrative control, improved infrastructure planning and enhanced connectivity, the new zone is expected to play a vital role in supporting the state’s long-term economic ambitions.
As operations begin from Visakhapatnam, railway officials and passengers alike will be watching closely to see how the new zone transforms transportation across the region
