Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have announced the qualification pathway for cricket at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The announcement confirms that the India Women’s Cricket Team has qualified. The Indian men’s team must wait until December 2026.
Cricket will return to the Olympics after 128 years. The tournament will feature six men’s teams and six women’s teams. All matches will be played in the T20 format.
India Women Book Olympic Spot
The India Women’s Cricket Team qualified as Asia’s highest-ranked eligible team. Australia, Great Britain, India, and South Africa also secured places from their respective continents.
The qualification is another major milestone for Indian women’s cricket. The team will now prepare for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Men’s Team Still in the Race
The Indian men’s team has not qualified yet. The qualification period runs from June 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
The ICC will select four teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Each continent will get one direct place. The USA can qualify as the host nation if it finishes inside the top 15 of the ICC T20I rankings.
If the USA misses the top 15, the next highest-ranked eligible team will take that place.
Final Spot Through ICC Qualifier
The ICC will award the final place through the first-ever ICC Olympics Qualifier. For the women’s event, the USA must also finish inside the top 15. If it fails, the highest-ranked non-qualified team will receive the final direct place.
West Indies Face Different Qualification Route
The ICC has confirmed that the West Indies cannot compete as one Olympic team. The team represents several Caribbean nations and not a single National Olympic Committee.
If West Indies finishes among the top non-qualified teams, the ICC will hold a separate Caribbean qualifying event. The winner will enter the ICC Olympics Qualifier.
The India women’s team has already secured its Olympic ticket. The men’s team will now aim to finish the qualification period with a strong ICC ranking and earn its place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
