Sri Lanka created history on October 22 by chasing down a massive 430-run target to defeat England by two wickets in an ODI match at Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The remarkable victory became the second-highest successful run chase in men’s ODI history.
England scored 429/4 in 50 overs, powered by captain Harry Brook’s sensational 202 off 116 balls. Will Jacks added an unbeaten 66 from just 30 deliveries to help England post a huge total.
Sri Lanka responded with an outstanding batting performance. Pavan Rathnayake led the chase with 130 runs, while Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka both scored 97. Janith Liyanage remained unbeaten on 61 and helped Sri Lanka reach 430/8 in 49.5 overs, sealing victory with one ball remaining.
The result places Sri Lanka behind South Africa’s record chase of 438 against Australia in 2006. Sri Lanka’s victory also made it a historic match in which an ODI double-century by an opposing batter ended on the losing side.
