Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday assured IAS and IPS officers that they can perform their duties without fear or political interference. Addressing the government’s first annual conference of District Collectors and Police Officers at the Secretariat, he urged officials to take decisions strictly according to the law.
The Chief Minister said the government would not interfere in the work of officers. He asked officials to take prompt and impartial action against offenders, regardless of their influence or position. At the same time, he stressed that innocent people should not suffer because of official action.
Mr. Vijay said the people had elected his government for transparency, honesty, social justice, and corruption-free governance. He urged officials to make these values the foundation of their administration.
CM Vijay Stresses Women’s and Children’s Safety
The Chief Minister said protecting women and children should remain the government’s top priority. He directed officials to ensure their safety without any compromise.
He also ordered the installation of CCTV cameras at vulnerable locations, including crime-prone areas, accident black spots, places frequently visited by senior citizens, and locations considered unsafe for women.
Mr. Vijay made it clear that police should not delay registering FIRs in cases involving crimes against women or under the POCSO Act. He also instructed schools and educational institutions not to hide complaints or delay reporting them to the authorities.
Strong Action Against Drugs and Crime
The Chief Minister directed officials to crack down on drug-related crimes. He said police should immediately arrest those involved in narcotics offences and produce them before the courts without delay.
At the same time, he stressed the importance of de-addiction programmes. He asked every district to conduct awareness campaigns and organise de-addiction camps to reduce drug demand among young people.
Focus on Better Governance
Mr. Vijay also instructed officials to improve the delivery of government services and ensure uninterrupted Public Distribution System (PDS) supplies.
He called for strict action against caste-based crimes, child marriages, illegal mining, illicit liquor production, and land-related disputes. He also asked departments to improve safety standards in chemical and firecracker units and take stronger steps to reduce road accidents.
The Chief Minister further directed officials to protect migrant workers, treat people visiting police stations with respect, and improve coordination during temple festivals, political rallies, and other public events.The two-day IAS and IPS officers’ conference will conclude on Tuesday.
