Chennai is set to take another step towards improving urban transport as the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase II prepares to open for passengers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the 15-kilometre elevated section, which forms part of Corridor 4 and includes 11 stations. The opening marks an important development for commuters travelling across parts of the city.
The stretch has been developed at a reported cost of ₹4,900 crore. One of its key features is a 3.7-kilometre double-decker section designed to accommodate metro and road infrastructure. The new route is expected to offer commuters another travel option and help ease pressure on Chennai’s busy roads.
Alongside the metro inauguration, Modi is expected to launch or dedicate infrastructure projects worth more than ₹13,000 crore. These projects reportedly cover highways, railway infrastructure, ports and a refinery, highlighting the scale of the planned infrastructure programme in Tamil Nadu.
Passenger services on the new metro section are expected to begin on the afternoon of the inauguration. Initially, services will operate for limited hours because construction work is scheduled during the night. Regular services are expected to expand from October 12, according to the information provided.
For daily commuters, the new stretch could improve connectivity and make some journeys more convenient. However, the actual reduction in travel time and road congestion will depend on passenger demand, service frequency and connectivity with other transport options.
The inauguration is expected to bring attention to Chennai’s expanding metro network and Tamil Nadu’s wider infrastructure development. Commuters should check official Chennai Metro Rail updates for confirmed operating hours, station details and service changes before travelling.
