Voting concluded on Tuesday in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu. The two by-elections attracted strong voter participation and significant political attention.
The Election Commission’s final figures put turnout at about 85.97% in Madurantakam and 80.31% in Dharapuram. Both seats recorded lower turnout than the recent Assembly election, but participation remained high.
The by-elections were triggered after AIADMK MLAs P Sathyabama and K Maragatham Kumaravel resigned from their seats and joined Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). They are now contesting the bypolls as TVK candidates.
In Dharapuram, TVK candidate P Sathyabama is facing candidates from the DMK, AIADMK, Communist Party of India and Naam Tamilar Katchi. In Madurantakam, TVK’s K Maragatham Kumaravel is among the key candidates in the contest.
The two constituencies together have 49 candidates. Madurantakam has 27 candidates, while Dharapuram has 22 candidates. Voting took place across 605 polling stations in the two constituencies.
The high turnout has made the bypolls an important electoral test for TVK, which is led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The results will provide an early indication of voter support for the party after it formed the government.
However, turnout alone does not indicate which candidate or party will win. The final outcome will depend on the votes secured by each candidate when counting takes place.
The campaign saw active participation from TVK, DMK, AIADMK and other parties. Political parties expressed confidence about their support among voters, while officials reported that polling was largely peaceful.
The results will be announced on October 9. Counting is expected to provide the first clear picture of the political outcome in both constituencies.
The Madurantakam and Dharapuram results are being closely watched because they could shape political discussions in Tamil Nadu ahead of future electoral contests.
