A major drug seizure in Tamil Nadu has triggered a political storm, with the DMK demanding a deeper investigation after the arrest of a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary. The case has put Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s party under pressure and intensified the political battle between the ruling TVK and its opponents.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested TVK functionary N. Boobalan in connection with an alleged drug trafficking case in Nagapattinam district. Authorities reportedly seized 135 kg of methamphetamine during the operation. The seizure has raised questions about the suspected network behind the drugs and whether others were involved.
Following the arrest, TVK removed Boobalan from all party positions. The party’s action came as opposition leaders questioned its commitment to tackling drug trafficking. The allegations against the arrested functionary remain subject to investigation.
DMK president M.K. Stalin launched a sharp attack on TVK, calling it a “Breaking Bad Party”. He questioned how the party could speak against drugs while a functionary faced allegations in a major narcotics case. Stalin also urged authorities to identify everyone connected to the suspected network.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also criticised Vijay over the incident. He referred to the Chief Minister’s public message, “Give up drugs, take up sports,” and questioned the government’s efforts to tackle narcotics. He called for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the case.
The controversy has also drawn criticism from other political parties, adding to pressure on the state government to ensure a thorough investigation. Opposition leaders have called for action against anyone found to be involved, regardless of political affiliation.
The case has now become a major political issue in Tamil Nadu. Investigators will need to establish the source of the seized drugs, the intended destination and whether the operation involved a wider trafficking network. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
