A Learjet 60 carrying nine people crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, November 1, killing everyone onboard.
The aircraft was travelling from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), it crashed near Cresthaven in Greenacres at around 12:50 PM EST.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard the aircraft died. The crash happened near Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North.
The accident occurred as heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across the region. AccuWeather meteorologists reported heavy rainfall, lightning and changing visibility near the crash site. Rainfall rates were estimated at around a quarter of an inch per hour. Visibility dropped to approximately two miles during heavier rain.
Air traffic control audio reportedly captured the crew discussing icing and moderate turbulence before the crash. The pilots requested a smoother altitude and later sought permission to climb to 37,000 feet. They subsequently reported a rapid descent and an overspeed condition. The pilot also issued a mayday call, according to reports.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash scene as resembling a missile falling to the ground, leaving a large crater beside the road.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is sending investigators to the site, while the FAA is supporting the investigation.
Authorities closed Military Trail in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Police urged drivers and residents to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
