Russia Plague Lab Death Raises Concern Over Possible Infection

A 28-year-old researcher in Russia has died after developing severe pneumonia, leading authorities to place hundreds of people under medical observation in Siberia. The researcher, identified in reports as Darya Shipilova, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. She reportedly became ill during a field trip in neighbouring Buryatia, near Russia’s border with Mongolia. Shipilova reached a hospital on September 29 after developing severe pneumonia. Doctors placed her on a ventilator, but she died two days later. Reports said she told medical staff that she had accidentally broken a test tube containing live bacteria. However, Russian authorities have not confirmed whether the incident caused her illness. The case has raised concerns because Shipilova worked at a facility that studies dangerous infectious diseases.

Authorities have started contact tracing and placed people who may have come into contact with the researcher under medical supervision. Reports said nearly 200 people faced quarantine measures at the Shelekhov hospital where Shipilova received treatment. Other hospitals in the area also introduced precautionary measures. Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev said officials were monitoring all identified contacts. He added that none had developed symptoms and initial laboratory tests were negative. Some workplaces near the laboratory also introduced safety measures as a precaution. At the same time, local officials urged people to avoid spreading unverified information while the investigation continues.

The biggest question is whether plague caused the researcher’s death. Russian authorities have not confirmed a plague infection or a wider outbreak. Buryatia head Alexei Tsydenov said the woman may have died from plague, but he also said there was no plague outbreak in the region. Russian health officials have also said there is no evidence of a wider spread of the disease. The situation has attracted attention because the incident involves an anti-plague research facility. Some experts have questioned reports about the broken test tube and called for a detailed investigation. However, claims of a possible cover-up remain unverified. Russia’s senior health officials have now joined the investigation. Chief state sanitary doctor Anna Popova travelled to Siberia to oversee the response and review the situation.

Pneumonic plague is a serious form of plague caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium. It affects the lungs and can cause fever, weakness, breathing problems, chest pain and coughing. Unlike bubonic plague, pneumonic plague can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets. However, early treatment with antibiotics can help patients recover. For now, Russian officials say they have found no evidence of a wider plague outbreak. Investigators are continuing to examine the researcher’s illness, possible laboratory exposure and the health of people who had contact with her.
