KOTTAYAM ( 17 June 2026): Health officials in Kerala are closely monitoring a woman who recently returned from South Sudan after she developed a fever. Doctors admitted her to Kottayam Medical College and placed her in an isolation ward as a precaution while they wait for her test results.
The woman visited a private hospital in Pala, Kottayam district, on Wednesday after experiencing fever and other symptoms. During the medical examination, doctors learned that she had recently travelled from South Sudan, a country where health authorities remain alert about infectious diseases.
Possible Ebola Case in Kerala Triggers Health Alert
After reviewing her travel history, the private hospital immediately informed the Kerala Health Department. Officials then decided to shift the woman to Kottayam Medical College for further monitoring and testing.
Doctors admitted her to a special isolation ward designed to handle suspected infectious disease cases. Medical teams collected blood samples and sent them to a laboratory for detailed testing.
Health officials said the results will determine whether she has Ebola or another illness. So far, Kerala has not reported any confirmed Ebola cases.
What Is Ebola?
Ebola is a rare but serious viral disease that affects humans and animals. The virus spreads through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or tissues of an infected person or animal.
The disease was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in Central Africa. Since then, several outbreaks have occurred in different African countries.
Ebola does not spread through the air like the common cold or flu. However, close contact with infected bodily fluids can lead to infection.
Symptoms of Ebola
Symptoms of Ebola can appear between 2 and 21 days after infection. Common symptoms include:
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Muscle and body pain
- Weakness and tiredness
- Sore throat
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach pain
In severe cases, patients may experience internal and external bleeding.
Can Ebola Be Treated?
There is no simple cure for Ebola, but early medical treatment can improve survival chances. Doctors provide fluids, medicines, and supportive care to help patients recover.
Vaccines are also available for some Ebola strains and have helped control outbreaks in affected regions.
Kerala Health Department Monitoring the Situation
The Kerala Health Department had already issued alerts to hospitals across the state due to Ebola cases reported in some African countries. Health officials are monitoring travellers arriving from affected regions and have instructed hospitals to remain vigilant.
Authorities have urged the public not to panic. They said all necessary safety measures are in place and that healthcare teams are following standard protocols.
The possible Ebola case in Kerala has attracted attention because of the woman’s recent travel history. Officials said they will continue monitoring the situation and will share updates after receiving the test results.
