Marijuana Plants Found Inside Kerala Temple, Excise Department Starts Probe

Kottayam, Kerala, June 20, 2026: Officials found two marijuana plants inside the Manikandapuram Sree Krishna Swamy Temple premises in Vakathanam, Kottayam district. The discovery happened during Kerala’s anti-drug drive, Operation Thunder.

Temple staff noticed the plants near a covered walkway inside the temple compound. They immediately informed the Excise Department.

A special team led by Excise Inspector Darshak R reached the temple and removed the plants. Officials said the plants measured 15.5 cm and 13 cm in height. Early findings suggest the plants may have grown from cannabis remnants left behind during the temple festival held in May. Thousands of devotees attended the festival.

Officials believe someone may have used marijuana and discarded the remains inside the temple compound. The seeds may have later sprouted naturally. The Excise Department has taken the plants into custody and started an investigation. Officers are trying to find out how the plants appeared inside the temple premises.

The discovery comes under Operation Thunder, a statewide campaign against narcotics. The Kerala Excise Department and Home Department launched the programme to reduce drug use across the state.

Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said the government wants to make Kerala a drug-free state. He said the Home, Health, Excise and Education Departments are working together to protect young people from narcotics.

Officials said the investigation will continue. They will take action if they find any violation of the law.
