Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for parts of Karnataka, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. The alert comes even as the state continues to face a rainfall deficit of more than 40% this June.

The IMD has placed Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts under an Orange Alert. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places, along with winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.Officials have advised people in these districts to stay alert, as heavy rain may lead to waterlogging, local flooding, and traffic disruptions.

Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural are expected to receive light rain with gusty winds during the next 24 hours. Light to moderate rainfall is also likely in Mysuru, Shivamogga, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Ballari, Chamarajanagara, Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kodagu, Kolar, Mandya, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Vijayanagara, and several other districts. Weather officials have also forecast moderate rainfall in parts of North Karnataka. Districts such as Gadag, Haveri, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura, and Yadgir may receive rain accompanied by winds of 30 to 40 kmph. Despite fresh rain forecasts, Karnataka continues to report below-normal rainfall this month.
Karnataka Records 40% Rainfall Deficit
According to the IMD, the state has recorded a rainfall deficit of more than 40% in June. Coastal Karnataka has received only 191 mm of rainfall against the normal 418 mm, resulting in a 54% rainfall deficit. Weather experts said El Niño and other climatic factors have contributed to the shortfall. Officials said the rainfall deficit could affect agriculture, water availability, and the state’s economy if the situation continues in the coming weeks.
