New Delhi: The Central Government has increased passport fees across India for the first time since 2012. The revised charges apply to fresh passports, passport renewals, replacement of lost or damaged passports, and Tatkal services under the amended Passport Rules, 1980.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued the notification on June 20, introducing a new fee structure for various passport-related services. The updated charges will come into effect nationwide, affecting all new applicants and those seeking passport-related services.
Passport Fees Increased
The fee for a 36-page passport under the normal scheme has been increased from ₹1,500 to ₹2,500. Under the Tatkal scheme, the fee has gone up to ₹5,000.
Applicants choosing a 60-page passport will now have to pay ₹3,500 under the normal scheme, while the Tatkal fee has been revised to ₹6,000.
Higher Charges for Lost or Damaged Passports
The government has also increased the fees for replacing lost, stolen, or damaged passports.
A replacement 36-page passport will now cost:
- ₹5,000 under the normal scheme
- ₹7,500 under the Tatkal scheme
A replacement 60-page passport will cost:
- ₹6,000 under the normal scheme
- ₹8,500 under the Tatkal scheme
Passport Rules Amended
The revised charges follow amendments made to the Passport Rules, 1980, under the Passports Act, 1967. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the updated fee structure is aimed at covering passport-related services and administrative costs.
India Issued Nearly 15 Million Passport Services in 2025
The MEA said that India provided around 15 million passport and passport-related services during 2025, including nearly 13.9 million passports. The large number of applications reflects the growing demand for passport services across the country.
New Passport Fees to Apply Across India
The revised passport charges will apply to all applicants across India once the new fee structure comes into force. Anyone applying for a fresh passport, renewing an existing passport, or replacing a lost or damaged passport will have to pay the updated fees.
