CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking by extending full support to Kerala’s Operation Toofan, one of the country’s largest anti-narcotics campaigns.
During a meeting in Chennai with Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the neighbouring states. The discussions focused on preventing the movement of narcotics across state borders and enhancing coordination between enforcement agencies.
CM Vijay Backs Joint Fight Against Drug Trafficking
Chief Minister Vijay assured Kerala of Tamil Nadu’s complete cooperation in the fight against drug networks. He directed officials to improve intelligence sharing, strengthen border surveillance, and increase coordination among police and enforcement agencies operating across both states.
The initiative will also focus on monitoring vulnerable entry points, including ports, airports, railway stations, and major road corridors, to prevent the movement of illegal narcotics.
Operation Toofan Records Major Crackdown
Launched on June 2, Operation Toofan has emerged as one of Kerala’s biggest anti-drug enforcement drives. According to official figures, authorities have registered more than 5,500 cases and arrested over 6,000 individuals during the first 43 days of the campaign.
Officials believe stronger collaboration with neighbouring states will further disrupt organised drug trafficking networks operating across southern India.
Vijay to Participate in Anti-Drug Awareness Programme
As part of the joint initiative, Chief Minister Vijay has also agreed to participate in a major anti-drug awareness programme in Kochi, where he is expected to join actor Mohanlal in promoting awareness about substance abuse among young people.
The programme aims to encourage public participation, educate students about the dangers of drug addiction, and promote a coordinated social movement against narcotics.
The meeting reflects the growing commitment of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala to strengthen inter-state cooperation, improve law enforcement coordination, and work together towards building a safer and drug-free South India.
