The Chief Ministers of six states have signed an agreement for the Kishau Multipurpose Dam Project, a major initiative aimed at supporting the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River. The agreement was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi are the six participating states. The project is expected to improve water availability and support the long-term management of water resources across the participating regions.
Speaking at the event, Home Minister Amit Shah expressed confidence that the completion of the Kishau Project would become an important chapter in the country’s history. He highlighted the project’s potential importance for water management and the rejuvenation of the Yamuna.
The Central government has declared the Kishau Multipurpose Project as a National Project. Under the proposed funding arrangement, the Centre will bear around 90 percent of the project’s financial burden, while the remaining 10 percent will be shared by the participating states.
The project is designed as a multipurpose water infrastructure initiative and is expected to provide benefits to several states. The agreement between the six states is aimed at strengthening coordination and ensuring that the project can move forward with the participation of all concerned governments.
The rejuvenation of the Yamuna remains an important environmental and public policy challenge. The river passes through several major regions and faces issues related to pollution, water availability and the pressure created by rapid urban growth.
The Kishau Project is therefore being presented as part of wider efforts to improve water resources and support the Yamuna basin. The cooperation between the six states could play an important role in implementing the project and managing its benefits.
