Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) shortly after being released from Rampur jail. His son, Abdullah Azam, walked free after the Allahabad High Court granted both of them bail earlier in the week in a dual PAN card forgery case.
However, ED officials detained Azam Khan at the jail gate in connection with a separate money laundering investigation. The probe is reportedly linked to alleged financial irregularities at a university associated with him.
The detention took place as supporters gathered outside the jail. Speaking to them, Azam Khan reportedly said the action felt like punishment for his identity. He also referred to his work in establishing schools and a university.
The tense situation attracted a large crowd, with supporters raising slogans as media personnel covered the incident.
Azam Khan is scheduled to appear before a court in Ghaziabad on Sunday in connection with the separate case.
The development has drawn attention as the senior Samajwadi Party leader faces legal proceedings in multiple cases.
