CCPA Fines Rapido ₹10 Lakh for Misleading Tipping Prompts

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a ₹10 lakh penalty on Roppen Transportation Services Private Limited, which operates the ride-hailing platform Rapido. The authority took action over alleged misleading advertisements, unfair trade practices and the use of dark patterns.

CCPA Penalty on Rapido

According to the Consumer Affairs Ministry, the CCPA found problems with the way Rapido prompted riders to pay more before confirming their rides. The authority said the practice could influence consumers into making additional payments.

The action followed a wider examination of cab and bike-taxi aggregator platforms in India. The CCPA reviewed the practices used by these platforms to understand whether they follow consumer protection rules.

Rapido and the Confirm Shaming Pattern

The CCPA identified Rapido’s tipping prompt as an example of “Confirm Shaming.” This term describes a dark pattern that can pressure consumers into choosing an option because they fear a negative outcome.

In this case, the authority said Rapido’s system could create a fear of losing the ride if a customer refused to pay more. As a result, some users could feel pressured to add a tip before confirming their booking.

The CCPA has identified Confirm Shaming as a dark pattern under the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023.

Why Dark Patterns Matter

Dark patterns are design methods that can influence users to make choices they may not otherwise make. These methods can appear in online shopping, digital services, subscriptions and other platforms.

Consumer authorities have increased their focus on such practices as more people use digital platforms for everyday services. Therefore, companies need to make their payment and booking processes clear and fair.

The CCPA’s action against Rapido sends a wider message to digital service providers. Platforms must ensure that their user interfaces do not mislead or pressure consumers into making additional payments.

The ₹10 lakh penalty also highlights the government’s continued focus on protecting consumers from unfair digital practices. The CCPA is expected to continue examining consumer-facing platforms and their use of online design practices.

For users, the action underlines the importance of checking payment prompts carefully before confirming a ride or other digital service.
