Sikkim’s capital Gangtok is moving closer to getting its first railway connection, marking a major step for the state’s transport network. The Railway Ministry has prioritised a new 34-km railway link between Rangpo and Gangtok. The project is expected to cost around ₹9,000 crore.
The proposed Rangpo-Gangtok railway line will extend the ongoing Sivok-Rangpo railway project. The Sivok-Rangpo project is already around 75% complete and is expected to provide the first railway connection to Sikkim. Once the extension reaches Gangtok, the state capital will have direct access to the national railway network.
The new rail link is expected to improve connectivity between Gangtok and other parts of the country. It could also make travel easier for residents, tourists and businesses. Sikkim is a major tourist destination, and better railway connectivity could support the growth of tourism and local trade.
The project will also improve access to the state during peak travel periods. At present, people travelling to Sikkim mainly depend on roads and nearby airports. A railway connection could provide another transport option and help reduce pressure on road networks.
The Rangpo-Gangtok line is also important from a strategic point of view because of Sikkim’s location near the international border. Better transport links can help improve movement and connectivity in the region.
The ongoing Sivok-Rangpo project has faced challenges due to the difficult terrain of the Himalayan region. However, construction has continued, with a large part of the project now completed.
With the Railway Ministry prioritising the Rangpo-Gangtok extension, Gangtok is now moving closer to a long-awaited railway connection. If the project progresses as planned, it could bring major changes to travel, tourism and economic activity in Sikkim.
