Swiss President Guy Parmelin arrived in India on Monday for a three-day state visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Parmelin is leading a high-level delegation during his visit, which aims to further strengthen relations between India and Switzerland.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Parmelin during a ceremonial programme at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. The Swiss President is expected to hold talks with Indian leaders on several key areas, including trade, investment, science, technology and innovation.
The visit also comes as India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) mark the first anniversary of their trade agreement. Switzerland is one of the four EFTA member countries. Both sides are expected to review progress under the agreement and discuss ways to increase trade and investment.
The leaders will also exchange views on important global and regional issues. In addition, the talks are expected to focus on creating new opportunities for businesses and strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
On Tuesday, Parmelin is scheduled to visit Noida International Airport. The visit will highlight Swiss expertise and its role in the development of the airport. It is also expected to showcase the growing cooperation between Indian and Swiss companies.
India and Switzerland have maintained friendly relations for several decades. Their cooperation covers trade, investment, education, science, technology, tourism and innovation. Therefore, Parmelin’s visit provides an opportunity for both countries to further expand their partnership.
The three-day visit is expected to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries. It also comes at a time when India is seeking greater international partnerships in trade, technology and investment.
