Trump Mixes Up Brazil Election With India in Voting Post

US President Donald Trump has drawn attention after appearing to mix up Brazil’s presidential election with India in a social media post. Trump was commenting on Brazil’s first-round presidential election held on October 4, 2026. He compared the speed of Brazil’s election process with delays in US cities such as Detroit and Philadelphia.

Brazil’s first-round election saw around 125 million people vote. Flávio Bolsonaro received about 47% of the vote, while Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured around 45%. Since neither candidate received more than half of the votes, Brazil will hold a runoff election on October 25.

Trump used the Brazilian election to criticise the US voting process. He pointed to delays in cities such as Detroit and Philadelphia and described parts of the American election system as corrupt. His comments come as the United States prepares for its upcoming midterm elections.

However, observers noted that Trump appeared to confuse Brazil’s election with India. India does not elect its President through a direct public vote. Instead, an electoral college made up of elected representatives chooses the President.

Brazil and India follow very different systems for electing their heads of state. Brazilian citizens directly vote for their presidential candidates. In India, elected Members of Parliament and state legislators take part in the presidential election.

Trump’s comments have once again brought attention to his criticism of US election procedures. He has repeatedly raised concerns about voting and election administration in the United States. His latest post adds an international comparison to those ongoing claims.

Brazil’s presidential runoff on October 25 will decide the winner of the election. Meanwhile, Trump’s comments about Brazil, India and the US voting system have sparked discussion over the differences between election processes in the three countries.
