The annual Banni Utsav at the Sri Mala Malleswara Swamy Temple in Devaragattu, Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, turned violent during the midnight idol procession. One person was confirmed dead, and more than 100 people were injured in the clashes.
The deceased was identified as 28-year-old Pothuraju from Alur. Thousands of devotees from Andhra Pradesh and three other states gathered for the centuries-old festival, where participants compete to take possession of the deity’s idols. According to local belief, obtaining an idol brings prosperity and good fortune.
Despite restrictions imposed ahead of the event and the deployment of around 1,000 police personnel, violence broke out during the procession. The incident once again raised concerns about crowd management and the safety of participants during the traditional celebration.
The Banni festival is rooted in a local legend and is considered a sacred tradition by many devotees. Participants continue to view the ritual as an important religious duty passed down through generations.
However, the recurring violence has raised questions about the risks associated with the custom. Reports have also mentioned a potentially higher death toll, but the confirmed number provided so far is one.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger safety measures to protect devotees while preserving the region’s long-standing religious traditions.
